(English) Petrobras

Petrobras, Brazil’s leading Energy Company, has several Oil & Gas fields in the Campos basin. The fields are explored by more than 30 oil platforms and the produced gas is delivered onshore for selling or used at the platforms, to generate energy or to be reinjected in order to support and enhance oil production.

Best of Breed Technologies to support Offshore Gas Planning

AIMMS is the core of a new application called MOVIGAS, a decision support tool for multi-annual offshore gas planning that helps managers to maximize Oil & Gas exploitation at Campos Basin, on Brazil’s southeast coast. The Campos Basin produces 20.8 million cubic meters of gas per day and its monthly revenue on onshore delivered gas is up to 100 million dollars.

Business description & background

Petrobras, Brazil’s leading Energy Company, has several Oil & Gas fields in the Campos basin. The fields are explored by more than 30 oil platforms and the produced gas is delivered onshore for selling or used at the platforms, to generate energy or to be reinjected in order to support and enhance oil production.

An offshore gas network connects platforms and the shore. Planning an efficient gas usage and delivery over this network is of utmost importance in at least two ways: (i) supplying the company’s customers Oil & Gas demand and (ii) keeping the platforms operating. Before this project, planning had already migrated from spreadsheets to an optimization environment, but the users still needed more performance, scalability and integration to other systems.

The challenge

The Operations Research and Information Technology team envisioned a new application using best of breed technologies, in order to provide fast, reliable and intuitive decision support.

The solution

The new application is connected to several company databases, providing the user up to date information. Having an intuitive graphical interface and AIMMS as its core optimizer, planners can now navigate through the gas network, generate an optimal plan and identify bottlenecks.

The benefits

The new application is faster, more user friendly and reliable than its predecessor. The software can be used by planners of other similar gas networks operated by the company.

How did AIMMS add value?

The easy, efficient database connectivity and fast matrix generation provided by the new application delivered the desirable performance requirements. The user friendly language, excellent technical support and large number of interoperability alternatives – such as AIMMS API’s and database connectivity – were considered key elements of the developed architecture.
