Haarlem, the Netherlands (May 12, 2014) – Papyrus is a leading European paper wholesaler. In 2013, it supported more than 68,000 customers in 20 countries from 43 warehouses and cross-dock platforms strategically located across Europe. In the face of a continuing secular decline in the demand for paper, Papyrus has maintained its competitive advantage by implementing radical changes in its supply chain network and re-envisioning workflow in forecasting, replenishment & supplier management.
Following a no-boundaries supply chain network redesign study, conducted by Districon using AIMMS, Papyrus concluded that in order to benefit fully from an optimised supply chain footprint they also needed to deploy a radically new centrally-driven, integrated supply chain planning concept. Their current ERP landscape however, prevented them from implementing this new SC control concept quickly, threatening to delay benefits.
Using AIMMS’ modelling technology, Districon and Papyrus developed a radical new SC planning and control platform to implement and support the new supply chain concept. In just four months, a platform was built to handle demand forecasting, inventory planning and the replenishment of all warehouses in Europe, in a way that minimised the amount of change needed from their ERP. This platform delivers the improved supply chain control that Papyrus need, and moreover, it enables them to deploy innovative concepts like multi-echelon inventory optimisation and integrated transport optimisation all over Europe. The solution allows the company to achieve its supply chain objectives, without having to invest massive amounts of time and money up front in the alignment of their different ERP applications.
“We were introduced to AIMMS by Districon as part of a conventional network modelling exercise, but we became more excited by the possibilities to extend AIMMS’ scope to operational optimisation of a complex network. Thanks to the flexibility of AIMMS and Districon’s business focus we will rapidly make the transition to our European Supply Chain concept.” – Bob Woodburn, SVP Supply Chain Papyrus group.
AIMMS VP EMEA Christophe Frère said: ’’Bob Woodburn is a visionary leader. He understands that companies today can increase their market share by using smarter business solutions. Papyrus is changing the game by acknowledging that ERP systems are necessary, but not sufficient to gain a competitive edge. With AIMMS PRO, Papyrus now has an enterprise modelling & optimization platform that facilitates rapid prototyping and the seamless deployment of SC Apps throughout the organization for all strategic, tactical and operational needs.’’
“With an innovative mindset, Papyrus, AIMMS and Districon have been able to bring optimization technology from a tactical to an operational level. By doing so, we have enabled Papyrus to make a step-change in their Supply Chain, giving them a competitive advantage in the paper industry.” – Jack Pool, Managing Director, Districon.
