Americas News: Charles River Associates and Paragon collaborate on Green Electricity project
Paragon Decision Technology has recently begun work on a groundbreaking project with researchers in the Energy & Environment Practice at Charles River Associates (CRA). The project, entitled “Transmission Topology Control for Infrastructure Resilience to the Integration of Renewable Generation,” falls under ARPA-E’s Green Electricity Network Integration (GENI) program and focuses on the creation of innovative control software and high-voltage hardware to reliably control the grid network and enable utilities and operators to optimally control the flow of power.
CRA was selected for award funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy for this project.
Paragon is proud to support this project and offer its recognized expertise as part of the winning team recently awarded the prestigious 2011 Edelman Award for Optimization Research.
Americas Events: INFORMS Annual Meeting 2011 Recap
We have just returned from the annual INFORMS meeting in Charlotte, NC and were excited to meet so many enthusiastic (new) users of AIMMS. Many students and professors have found their way to our new Free AIMMS Academic License and our booth in the Exhibit Hall was great place for students to get personal support with some of their questions. In addition, several professors commented on how they have found AIMMS to be a valuable tool in the classroom, allowing students to build modeling skills without the need to learn a programming language.
By the attendance at our three AIMMS+CP sessions, many are looking forward to our upcoming release of CP.
The “Reprise of the 2011 Edelman Award-Winning Presentation” by our customer, Midwest ISO, also drew a lot of attention and we look forward to participating in similar competitions with our customers in the near future.
The Annual Meeting was a great success and we look forward to the INFORMS Annual Meeting 2012 in Phoenix, AZ.

EMEA Events: Energy Transition & Reality (Shell – Gasterra)
Paragon participated at the senior executive ‘Energy Transition & Reality’ conference organized by the Energy Delta Institute (EDI). The topic of ‘Energy Transition’ was high on the agenda. Everyone is aware of the sustainability goals for 2050 but how can they actually be reached? In the interim various risks, uncertainties, and scenarios must be dealt with. Wim Thomas – Chief Energy Advisor of Shell International – and Gertjan Lankhorst – CEO of GasTerra – informed us about the methods that can be used to deal with long term goals in a short term world. Optimization has high potential to calculate the feasibility of scenarios and to get most value out of your current assets.

New AIMMS Pricing 2012
Effective January 1, 2012, we will be simplifying the pricing scheme of AIMMS by offering one price for development and deployment use. This also means that we will cease the delivery of size restricted (small and medium) licenses. Every license will have – by default – the ability to work with the COIN-OR solvers CBC and IPOPT; all commercial solvers (including the XA and CONOPT) will be available as optional add-ons.
If you are a customer of AIMMS, your local representative will contact you to explain these changes. Of course you are welcome to contact us for more details.
We have started an AIMMS blog to update our user community on new AIMMS features. Our experts share tips and tricks on how you can get the most out of AIMMS.
One recent post in the AIMMS blog is titled, ‘Reading multi-dimensional Excel data with ExcelRetrieveTable’. In this post, the functionality in AIMMS for reading from multi-dimensional spreadsheets is explained.
