Department of Energy selects AIMMS for NEMS Modeling

We are pleased to announce that AIMMS has been selected by the US Energy Information Administration as part of the National Energy Modeling system (NEMS). Paragon’s US office is delighted to work with the US Energy Information Administration modeling team on this opportunity to bring the benefits of optimization and decision support science to our society. The results of this work are published annually in the Annual Energy Outlook (AEO) and are used to analyze the effects of government laws and regulations related to energy production and use; the potential impact of new and advanced energy production, conversion, and consumption technologies; the impact and cost of greenhouse gas control; the impact of increased use of renewable energy sources; and the potential savings from increased efficiency of energy use. For more information, access the EIA’s website.

Americas News: MOPTA student submissions available online

We are making available the projects, presentations, and report submissions done by the finalists of the 3rd AIMMS/MOPTA Optimization Modeling Competition.  The winners were announced at the MOPTA 2011 Conference banquet with Team RANDOM (University of Twente, The Netherlands) taking first place for their heuristic approach to solving this year’s second order cone problem (quadratic nonconvex). Team RANDOM includes team members Arturo E. Perez Rivera and Rick van Urk, along with their advisor, Bodo Manthey.

EMEA News: Production Planning at Rijk Zwaan
AIMMS partner Outperform has been selected to provide a system for the planning of global seed production at Rijk Zwaan. Deciding factors were the quality of the Outperform software products, a demonstration of how these can be applied to the seed production challenge and commitment to meet the requirements in full. EMEA Events: The Golden Age of Gas

On October 14th, Paragon was invited to participate at an event of the Future Energy Networks Initiative at The Dutch Embassy in Berlin, Germany. This event was organized by the Dutch (3TU) and German (Matheon) Technical Universities. Open Grid Europe GmbH and Gas Transport Services B.V. – Germany’s and Holland’s leading natural gas transmission companies – clearly indicated in their presentations the need for smart optimization solutions for the national and European gas networks. While today both companies mainly simulate their operations, there is an urgent need for optimization in the near future because of changing market conditions (decoupled entry/exit gas system) and the anticipated growth in demand (the Golden Age of Gas).

Spotlight: Units of Measurement

Although we are continuously developing and improving features, it is good to highlight existing features that make AIMMS unique and provide value to our customers. During a visit of BP last month, we were complimented on our incorporated Units of Measurement functionality. It has saved BP days of development, helps them to assure models and data are properly scaled and defined, and allows end-users to select between different units of measure (such as English or Metric) for data display and entry. As BP states, these are important ingredients to capture the full benefits of optimization. For the complete quote: click here.

If you want to learn how to improve your models, please check out the Units of Measurement chapter in the Language Reference or contact us at support@aimms.com.
