Running AIMMS Agent & Webservice projects under Windows Vista

The information in this article applies to:

  • AIMMS 3.8 and higher 
  • Windows Vista

Summary

On Windows Vista, AIMMS Agent & Webservice examples and projects do not work in AIMMS 3.8 or higher.

Symptoms

AIMMS agent applications cannot create or connect to queues. Webservice clients cannot connect to the AIMMS web service listener.

Cause

The default settings of the Windows Vista firewall do not allow programs to listen on a TCP/IP port (even locally), unless such programs have been explicitly added to the list of allowed programs in the Windows Vista firewall.

Resolution

To allow the necessary AIMMS programs to listen to TCP/IP ports, run the following two commands, as Administrator, in a DOS window:

netsh firewall add allowedprogram
         “C:\Program Files\Paragon Decision Technology\Common\Bin\AimmsHandlerService.exe”
         “Aimms HTTP/RPC Handler Service” ENABLE SUBNET

netsh firewall add allowedprogram
         “C:\Program Files\Paragon Decision Technology\Common\Bin\AimmsServiceHandler.exe”
         “Aimms Service Handler” ENABLE SUBNET

Discussion

The two commands above allow connections from the local subnet only. To allow connections from any location, please consult the documentation of the Windows Vista firewall.
