New AIMMS release cycle started with first Feature Release of AIMMS 3.10

To enable customers to benefit quickly from newly developed features, we have introduced a new release cycle with multiple Feature Releases per year. In addition we will release an annual Production Release which includes all features introduced in the Feature Releases of the previous year. The new release cycle has been kicked off in June with the first Feature Release of AIMMS 3.10, which includes:

  • Accessing the text representation of your model easily
  • Changing matrix coefficients directly from the Math Program Inspector
  • Storing and managing different views (states) of a Pivot Table
  • Adding tooltips to buttons in your GUI
  • Checking the coordinates to align GUI objects

The second Feature Release of AIMMS 3.10 is planned later in September, and will include the following additional features:

  • Support for CPLEX 12.1, which includes parallel threads at no additional charge
  • Tracing option for database communication
  • Assertion functionality in the Pivot Table to implement data validity checks
  • Executable AIMMS Viewer, which requires no installation

AIMMS tutorial for Excel users

In addition to the Tutorial for Beginners and Tutorial for Professionals, we now provide a third introductory tutorial: the Tutorial for Excel Users. This new tutorial is aimed at people who are familiar with the Solver functionality of Microsoft Excel, and want to migrate to AIMMS to be able to deal with larger optimization problems in a faster and more convenient way.
You can download the Tutorial for Excel users from our website

Learn AIMMS playfully with G-AIMMS

We have launched a new way to extend your AIMMS knowledge and/or modeling skills in a fun and easy way: G-AIMMS, a series of AIMMS-based games. Witch Apprentice is the first G-AIMMS. It follows a witch apprentice who rises in rank in the witches’ guild by solving modeling and AIMMS assignments. By completing the various levels you familiarize yourself with modeling optimization problems in AIMMS as well as building a simple graphical user interface, importing data from a database and Excel, and case management.
You can download the Witch Apprentice levels from our website and start playing.

ZIB team wins AIMMS-CPLEX modeling competition at MOPTA

On August 20, the AIMMS-CPLEX modeling competition ended at MOPTA 2009 with announcing Zuse Institute of Berlin as the winner. Since February 1, around 30 teams from all over the world enlisted to compete. The 3 finalists, Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX), USA), University of Twente (The Netherlands), and Zuse Institute of Berlin (Germany), presented their final results live at LeHigh University in Bethlehem, PA.
All submissions can be found at the AIMMS website.

AIMMS reference cases

In this section we highlight five new AIMMS Reference cases from AIMMS Service Partners: Applied Optimization (USA), CQM (Netherlands), Outperform (USA) and UniSoma (Brazil).

Applied Optimization: Resource Allocation in a Pharmaceutical company

Applied Optimization has developed a decision support application for management and allocation of resources at the Safety Assessment division of a global Fortune 100 Pharmaceutical major. The application optimizes the utilization of limited resources such that the throughput of pre-clinical drug candidates is maximized and the candidates with the highest potential for success are preferentially supported.

CQM: Fleet Planning and Monitoring for Shell

In close cooperation with Shell, CQM has developed a Fleet Planning and Monitoring Tool to support Shell’s recruitment, training and assignment of crews for the 25 LNG (gas) carriers currently under construction. The tool is an AIMMS-based application with planning as well as monitoring functionalities.

CQM: Production Capacity Modeling at Avandis

CQM has assisted Avandis in modeling its production of hundreds of types of bottled spirits and liqueurs. The model computes overviews of available and used capacities for a range of demand scenarios, displays which production resources will be the bottleneck, and suggests a possible tank assignment for the demand horizon in a GANTT chart.

Outperform: Network Analysis for Wastech

Wastech, a Vancouver-based environmental services firm, has chosen Outperform’s Network Analysis solution to plan operations for one year ahead. The Wastech network includes long-distance transfers to landfills and incinerators by different sized trailers, and contract transport on the backhaul. Outperform’s sophisticated AIMMS model optimizes the operations and provides the ability to re-plan when faced with an interruption.

UniSoma: Integrated Animal Planning at Aurora Alimentos

UniSoma has developed and deployed an integrated solution to plan the production chains of poultry, swine and diary products at Aurora Alimentos. The solution includes statistical forecast models, optimization models in AIMMS, control modules in Java, and a central database. The optimization models are solved efficiently on a central high-performance server.
